Comfortable Wisdom Teeth Extractions Under Sedation

Discover

Wisdom teeth are the last set of molars to develop, typically appearing during the late teens or early twenties. While some people have enough room for their wisdom teeth to grow in normally, others may experience crowding, discomfort, infection or other dental complications.

At Smile Design Dental Care, we provide professional wisdom teeth extractions with your comfort and safety in mind. Our experienced dental team will carefully assess your wisdom teeth and recommend the best treatment approach for your individual needs.

Worried about the procedure? You have options. Nitrous oxide and IV sedation are available to help you feel calm and comfortable during your treatment.

Why Do Wisdom Teeth Need to Be Removed?

Wisdom teeth don’t always need to be removed. However, extraction may be recommended if they are causing—or are likely to cause—dental problems.

Wisdom teeth may become:

  • Impacted because there isn’t enough room for them to erupt properly
  • Partially erupted, creating areas where food and bacteria can become trapped
  • Crowded, potentially affecting neighbouring teeth
  • Infected, resulting in pain, swelling or gum inflammation
  • Difficult to clean, increasing the risk of cavities and gum disease
  • Associated with cysts or other changes around the tooth

Removing problematic wisdom teeth can help protect your oral health and prevent future complications.

What to Expect During Wisdom Teeth Extraction

Every patient and every wisdom tooth is different. Before treatment, your dentist will examine your teeth and take the necessary X-rays to determine the position of your wisdom teeth and develop an appropriate treatment plan.

1. Comprehensive Assessment

We’ll evaluate the position and development of your wisdom teeth and discuss whether extraction is recommended.

2. Personalized Treatment Plan

Your dentist will explain the procedure, answer your questions and discuss your options for keeping you comfortable throughout treatment.

3. Comfortable Treatment

Wisdom teeth are removed using local anesthesia to numb the treatment area. For patients who experience dental anxiety or would simply prefer additional relaxation, nitrous oxide and IV sedation are available.

4. Recovery & Aftercare

We’ll provide detailed aftercare instructions to help support a smooth recovery. Some swelling, tenderness and discomfort are normal following extraction, particularly when multiple wisdom teeth are removed.

Our team is available to answer questions and support you throughout your recovery.

Sedation Options for Your Comfort

Nitrous Oxide Sedation

Often referred to as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is inhaled through a small mask placed over your nose. It can help you feel relaxed and at ease while you remain conscious and responsive throughout the procedure.

The effects wear off quickly after the gas is stopped, allowing you to return to your normal activities sooner in many cases.

IV Sedation

For patients who are particularly anxious or undergoing a more involved extraction, IV sedation may be an option. Medication is administered through an IV to help you enter a deeply relaxed state during treatment.

Your dentist will discuss whether IV sedation is appropriate for you and provide specific instructions regarding preparation, transportation and recovery.
